Have you ever tried to mow your lawn for the first time in the spring just to realize your lawnmower wouldn’t start? Did you know this could be due to the way you stored it the previous fall?
To avoid any damages to your lawnmower next spring, our experts share how to properly store your lawnmower in 5 easy steps.
1. Empty the gas tank
Because gasoline is a non-stable fuel, leaving it in your lawnmower could cause the gas to degrade over winter. This could cause damages when spring comes.
To avoid this problem, during your last mow, empty your gas tank by leaving your lawnmower running until it runs out and stops itself.
2. Check the oil
Just like any motor vehicle, lawnmowers also need oil changes from time to time. It is very important to check the oil levels before storing it for winter. Dispose of the old oil and replace as needed.
3. Deep Clean
After several months of usage, your lawnmower needs to be carefully cleaned. While tipping it backwards, remove excess grass under blades with the help of a brush and soapy water. If you choose to use a garden hose, make sure the water pressure is adequate to avoid breaking your lawnmower and its respectable parts.
Never tip your lawnmower to its side while cleaning it, this could cause irreversible mechanic damages.
4. Check the blades
Did you know mowing your lawn with dull blades could cause more harm than good to your lawn? At the end of the season, it’s important to check their sharpness and to sharpen as needed. By doing it now, your lawnmower will be ready to go for next spring!
5. Storing
Once your lawnmower is clean, it’s time to store it where it will have a relaxing winter. Choose a clean and dry place, such as a shed. We don’t recommend storing it inside your house, near heat sources, or under a tarp in your garden.
By following these tips your lawnmower will have a safe and sound winter. Don’t forget that properly storing it in the fall, will assure an easy start next spring!
